When Nature Calls: The 2010 Nissan Leaf EV
Spreading like wildfire, the latest and most likely permanent, craze is for automakers to make an electric vehicle for eco-friendly drivers around the globe. So, what does Nissan do!?! They make four of them! At the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn made the announcement that over the course of the next few years, Nissan will offer four all-new electric vehicles for the earth loving public. The zero-emission Nissan Leaf, announced back in August, will be joined by the all electric version, NV200 light commercial van that made it’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show. More exciting was Ghosn’s announcement that their luxury sister company, Infiniti, will be getting an all electric compact four-door sedan added to their line up! I am assuming that with the pressure Toyota is putting on the luxury market with their new 2010 Lexus HS Hybrid, Infiniti needed to counter that offer with something of equal or greater value. By the sound of things, Infiniti is headed in the right direction. Since Infiniti is very geared towards performance, more so I believe than Lexus, I can’t wait to see what styling it will sport and numbers it will boast. No further details were unveiled by Ghosn on the four-door, but promised that it will be unveiled in the very near future. Expect the Nissan Leaf and the Infiniti four-door electric sedan to share a similar drivetrain. Reason being, simply R&D is expensive and no sense in not using what already works. And finally, the fourth model being tossed around is said to be based on the Land Glider concept, shown for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show. Exciting stuff coming from Nissan and it is sure to stir up some healthy competition from other automakers to make the “next best thing” even better.
