NYC Helmets by fuseproject
Fuseproject was commissioned by New York City to create a new product and brand for the new generation of bikers, would provide safety both in a context of a free bike program, and of a policy to promote cycling in the City.
The helmet features an innovative two-fold design that consists of a protective polystyrene shell on the inside, covered with a customizable soft fabric that attaches with integrated straps. Unfortunately this product is not yet available for purchase, NYC is currently distributing helmets at community events around the city.

They're cool looking. Kinda like the covers you see on Vietnam war era helmets. I'd total get one if it weren't for the lame NYC logo on the side. Wear one of these in any other city and you'll instantly look like one of those New York City supremacist a-holes. Seriously though Yves. You could've been a bit more discrete and clever with the branding.

Definitely fashionable. However, from a safety perspective, helmets are constructed so that when they contact the ground they slide with ease over the asphalt/concrete surface in order to guard against neck injury. I foresee the fabric “catching” on the pavement and increasing the likelihood of spinal damage/neck damage to the rider. Is this a case of “form following fashion”.

[...] Fuseproject has teamed up with NYC to design and distribute what can best be described as a helmet hat. It’s an attachment for your helmet that makes it look far less dumb. Granted this is not the final solution in making helmets look not dumb, however it is a bold step forward. [...]

Ok, so it's a BMX inspired bike helmet with changeable cover? Where's the innovation in that, besides the green cover looking like a 50 year old military cloth?

Forget pavement. I'd get one to protect my ears from Milwaukee winters- which apparently began yesterday.

I've spent a lot of time in Amsterdam lately and have yet to see a helmet on any bike rider. Are they simply more aware and athletic than Americans, that they can have an entire country built on bike culture, yet don't give a thought to helmets?

Totally silly. Back in the 70's and 80's, bike helmets were fabric covered. That was discontinued for exactly the reason that morethantoastmtx stated above: the fabric was catching on obstacles and pavement during a collision, and causing injuries to be worse than a sliding surface. So go ahead and push them as “fashionable” if you think they are, but they're not optimally safe.
Safety first, fashion last. Last year, I was cutoff by a car and went head first into a windshield. I was lucky that nothing happened. Amazing. And of course I lived to write this post.
Great item, wonder if it'll ever arrive in Israel…
how can i find out the next place they'll be distributed? I'd love to wear one when I ride seeing as I have no helmet currently and this just might save my hide some day.

[...] Although biking around New York City is a common sight, helmets are not. Any New Yorker wearing a helmet while bicycling is likely under the age of ten. So in an attempt to get more bicyclists to protect their fragile heads, local officials have commissioned brand developer fuseproject to design and release trendy helmets. [...]
I used to live in New York. I now live in Houston, Texas. I'd love one of these helmets, to scream about, as I ride around in Houston. Besides I don't even own a helmet right now.
