Multi Touch DJ Light Table: GERGWERK

The Multi Touch DJ light table by Designer Gerg Kaufman brings a new way of looking at DJ’ing. It’s multi touch interface which mimics 2 turntables and a mixer make it fun to interact with the music and keep the so important connection to the crowd. I think the only part he needs to rework is the thinking behind the pitch control and beat matching controls, which will not be as useful in a real world DJ environment.

you can get this on your ipad when they start making one that’s three feet wide. jesus why do so many people think the ipad is the only piece of tech on the planet these days? oh, that’s because you’re cheap and want proprietary software that can only be used in a way steve wants.

I’m probably being a kill joy, but while looking nice this is not really a step forward, it’s a step back.

    - how do you nudge a platter? how do you speed up a track just a tiny amount (tapping you finger in time with the beat is not accurate for most types of music that need a long mix like prog, techno or dub breaks
    - how do you cut an eq band in and out across a half (like cutting the bass kick out (1/2) or cutting the 4th out of a phrase)
    - if you’re going to set a loop, a lot of the time, you don’t have time to hold your hand there as you decide how many beats, you want to be able to tap either an in/out or a number.

very cool though – like it as a concept.

Dj equipment has barely changed over the years for many reasons, but a major one, is that no one has come up a with a controller that works better (hence why CDJ’s are so popular as they mimic records, and a mixer has stayed the same forever)

P.s i don’t think i’ve ever been to anything but a house party where i had to take my own gear. carting around vinyl and cd wallets maybe….

I would Learn it due to the fact I would probably go into a club that has just that (you have to keep up with the times). Same as I’ve gone into clubs with just CDJs. But I Will never ever ever ever ever give up my turns and vinyl.
