Interview: Enso – Martin Ivanov

Today we have the pleasure to bring you one of the first in a series of Artist interviews on flylyf. Our first features Enso aka Martin Ivanov.

First of all we would like to thank you for taking the time to provide flylyf.com with this interview. Tell us a little bit about yourself, what made you become a graphic / retoucher and how did you start your career?

Briefly – My name is Martin Ivanov – ENSO, I’m 21 year’s old and I’m working as a freelancer the last half an year. Till now I’m satisfied with this kind of working, because I have much more freedom than before. Despite the fact that I have graduated from the National School of Applied Arts “St. Luka”, department Woodcarving and I will always love the Woodcarving as an art, I chose to make a career in the graphic design. The reason to take such a decision was that I have been always impressed by the original and single minded images, that attract the attention immediately. When I say images, I mean web sites too and especially interactive web sites. About the beginning now – at first I began to work as a web designer in a Danish company in Sofia, and in my spare time and only for my pleasure I was spending endless hours in retouching, learning all by myself. I was so devoted to the process, that sometimes I didn’t even understand that the night has passed I have to go to work.

Where do you find inspiration to create your work?

My biggest inspiration is the nature but I find inspiration too in some moments, when I’m in a strange mood and I face all that surround me in a different and abstract way.

Could you describe for us your typical ‘start to finish’ work flow when working on a design?

1. I find the basic idea
2. Choose the images that will use
3. Draw the rough sketch or just put the images in an order and make the composition
4. Make some rough changes, if they are necessary
5. Begin to refine the composition – proportions of its elements, distances between them, colors etc.
6. I come into the details and make the fine tunes
7. Final. Through all the process of the creating the image could be changed concerning any new and better idea, that have came to my mind, so till the final steps everything could be changed in the name of the best possible result.

What are your tools of the trade, both hardware and software?

My tool is: Mac Book Pro 17” + Dell 24”, Wacom Intuos3 A5 Wide, Photoshop + Illustrator, CorelPainter .. adobe products..

Can you tell us 3 Sites that you visit most for inspiration?

I don’t have a favorite one, but maybe most of all I visit: www.thefwa.com , www.behance.net, and my Google Reader :) )

For the last question, what technique would you say is the most important one to master first

I wouldn’t call it technique, but more an attitude – a great attention to the detail. Nothing is small or meaningless, when is being a part of the final image and result.
