Apple logo LCD Macbook mod

Check out this cool macbook mod by Eddie Zarick, that converts the Apple logo on the back of the laptop into an LCD screen.
There’s no specific details to the hardware he used, but OS X automatically recognizes it as a secondary LCD when it boots up. Then you can either set a simple image desktop or play your iTunes visualizations through it; you could even funnel your iSight camera output through it. Very cool!

wow…trying to profit from a DYI project rather then share it will the community…thats weak. I'm sure some sap will buy it.

btw…the way that this is done is a tiny LCD you can get for china for about 50 bucks with a pin out to either VGA or DVI (a lot of LCDs don't have a VGA connection, only serial…)…you then connect the monitor to either a internal secondary PCI-E bus video card (you can get them online for about 200 bucks) or a super shitty USB bus VGA adaptor (which kills your system due to high resource usage). Technically you could just connect it to the internal vga/dvi bus, but according to this guy you can use 3 moniters on this laptop, which is impossible from just using the macbook's graphic's card (it only has 2 DACs, therefor can only display 2 moniters at a time). These LCDs are very low power, and can usually be powered by stealing off the 5volt USB bus, hot wiring off another 5 volt rail, or possibly the monitor inverter. hope this is a good starting point for anyone who wants to make this rather useless mod.

An easier way to do this would be to use a standard serial LCD, connect it to a USB bus using a serial to USB converter, and then just program the LCD using one of the many popular LCD programing programs (most are open source). The upside to this is that you don't take away resources from your graphics card, and for the most part drawing on a tiny screen 640x480max….doesn't take that much from your primary processor.

I want to do this so bad! But being that I'm not technical on my knowledge of computers at all, the reality is it will not happen :[

At least your willing to help out on how to do this. Just like you said above "trying to profit from a DYI project" as you notice his ebay listing only going for 750 or somewhere close to it. Just because you get video views and hits… doesn't mean it's going to sell. I mean after all any computer guru you talk to can do it for you. see i thought it was going to be some simple little coding using open source with the apple that is already placed there i didnt know you would actually have to open the screen and void the warranty… well, i guess i am getting a hell of a deal! ;P

Unlike the CRT monitor, Laptop LCD doesn’t use as much power. So, the battery of the laptop is enough to power its LCD monitor. There is a power supply cables within the laptops. That cables carry the power from the battery to its LCD monitor and other power needed devices. It is the simplest answer of how is the LCD on the laptop powered?
