I commend the artist on the execution of the model and rendering. But it really fails as a ‘concept.’ A concept vehicle is of course supposed to be a very concise expression of the company’s future direction. This really isn’t a departure from what we’ve been seeing for the past ten years or more. I could see this as a 2010 M8 perhaps.

A lot can change in three years. Just look at the difference between a 2005 3-Series (E46) and a 2006 3-Series (E90)… VERY different. BMW has been changing the designs every six or seven years on any individual Series – the time it usually takes any auto manufacturer to take a design concept to production. (For instance the concept for the 1-Series was presented in 2002 and then hit showroom floors by 2008) The current 6-Series design came out around 2003. Based on this frequency, it is up for a complete redesign in 2009/10. But seeing as how we haven’t even see any spy shots for a new 6-Series on the road, a 2012 release date makes sense.

BUT this rendering doesn’t look conceptual or “forward thinking.”

i’m not sure how much you guys think car design is going to change in three years, i’m sure this car in design will be much more “forward thinking” then the reality of any car that bmw will release that model year.
